Basic Flush Valve Information

Details . . .

Douglas Valve/Flush Valve

The Douglas Valve/Flush Valve is the valve that lets the water out of the tank and into the bowl. It is very important to note that there are many other types of flush valves in use. You need to know the water closet/toilet you have and the parts that belong in it. Some closets take proprietary parts. Register as a member for more detailed information. Installing incorrect or inferior parts in a closet today will only lead to problems down the road.

Overflow Tubes

The overflow tubes are brass and come in 3 different sizes: 1”, 1 8”, 1 ¼”. These are all outside diameter measurements. They all screw into the base of the Douglas Valve and it is typical of them to break at the base while changing the tank ball. The overflow tube prevents the tank from overflowing. The Hush tube goes into the overflow tube to provide the rim rinse in the bowl.

Upper Lift Wire

The upper lift wire is typically 8” and is bent to fit each closet. In replacing the upper lift wire, please only use solid copper or solid brass lift wires. The upper Lift wire connects the lower lift wire to the tank handle.

Tank Guide

The tank guide attaches to the overflow tube and is adjusted to center the lower lift wire over the center of the seat of the Douglas valve. The best guides are made of brass and are adjustable to fit the variety of Douglas Valves.

Lower Lift Wire

The lower lift wire attaches the upper lift wire to the tank ball. The wires are either 4”, 4-½”, 5” and the better wires are either solid copper or solid brass. There is a 5 ½ ” wire but it is only used in an Eljer tank with a bolt on guide.

Tank Ball

The tank ball is used to keep the water in the tank until it is flushed. The tank ball is connected with the lower lift wire. The most common size tank ball is the 2 3/8" to  2 ¾” size, but there is a 3” tank ball as well that was used. You cannot measure an old tank ball because after being in the water for years it expands and deteriorates.

Flush Valve Shank Gasket

The flush valve makes the seal between the Douglas Valve and the bottom of the inside of the tank. This prevents the water from leaking on the floor with wall hung tanks.

Lock Nut

The lock nut is on the bottom of the tank and holds the Douglas valve on.
